I have watched my fair share of Indian wedding-rel

I have watched my fair share of Indian wedding-related TV shows and movies (and loved them all, even the wildly unrealistic ones 😆), but I realized pretty quickly I knew very little about the traditions included in these weddings. When I went to India last fall I started asking questions and discovered I had a lot to learn (and still do)! To me, this is the best feeling. The idea for this episode was born.

I quickly discovered an episode on ALL Indian weddings was impossible. Weddings vary from place to place, family to family, caste to caste, community to community. India is also massive, with regional differences developing between the North, the South, and other areas. In this episode, we are talking about the South to keep info manageable.

My guest, Dheeraj, has been to lots of weddings, and he does a great job of explaining some of the basic essentials that go into a traditional South Indian Hindu wedding. I’m so grateful he took the time to share. It was a blast to talk with him.

Maybe we learn world history so it changes us. A few months ago I opened a question box here on IG and let you ask us all about the podcast, and so many great questions came in! My research assistant, Rachel, and I had a blast answering them in this episode.

It’s a departure from the usual Wiser World content, but honestly it felt so nice to take a little break and focus on what we are learning, how we create the episodes, and how it affects our lives. Next month we’ll be back with more history and culture.

One thing I failed to mention in the episode was how much my husband helps me. Many a Saturday he’s hanging with our kids while I finish stuff, and did you know he’s also the audio engineer who mixes every show? Yup. I send him stuff at 11pm some nights and he gets it done. 🤪 He’s the best.

I am also so grateful to work with Rachel—she pokes holes in all my drafts, reads a ton to add lots of perspective, helps me see things in a new light, and is such a curious and intelligent person. I hope you listen to the episode to get a glimpse into the behind the scenes of this work.

In studying for our Sudan and South Sudan 101 epis

In studying for our Sudan and South Sudan 101 episodes, the western region of Sudan, known as Darfur, came up a lot. I was surprised by celebrity names like George Clooney and Don Cheadle popping up in my research. Somehow I had missed this when it first began.

Truth is that toward the end of the 2nd Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005), an intense conflict broke out in Darfur that only recently has been semi-resolved. And now with Sudan in another civil war, Darfur is right in the middle of the violence yet again.

I felt uncomfortable only slipping in bits and pieces into the Sudan/South Sudan 101 episodes, and knew the region of Darfur deserved an episode of its own. While the history is not lightweight or easy, it’s so important. I hope you give this episode a listen and that it’s a helpful insight into this complex region of the world that needs more of a spotlight.

Over 1 MILLION DOWNLOADS! 🙌

Earlier this year we hit over a million downloads for the podcast. I didn’t mention anything because I just… didn’t? I had a lot going on and it slipped through the cracks.

But the other day, I was driving in my car and it hit me out of nowhere that it was an accomplishment worth celebrating. I know that what matters most in life isn’t measurable by society’s silly metrics, but at the same time it does feel like a big milestone.

I’ve been podcasting for a little over two years, have only 40 episodes (well, #40 coming this Wed), I’ve done verrry little marketing, and there are over a million downloads. WHAT?!

Thank you for all of the shares and enthusiasm over this work—I’m convinced that YOU, and maybe some algorithmic luck on Spotify 😉, have helped this happen.

I never ever could have taught this many people just in the classroom, and I feel grateful to be able to teach through podcasting. I never could have imagined the reach this podcast could have, and it’s only the beginning.

I hope you give it a listen—it’s heavy and hard in many respects, but it’s critically important we know it! As I write this, Sudan is #1 on the International Rescue Committee’s list of crisis in the world. South Sudan is #3. (Gaza is #2). We need to know how this came to be, and in less than an hour (and that’s if you listen on only 1x!) you can learn a bit more as to why.

Education doesn’t solve all problems but we can’t help if we don’t know they exist, and we can’t help best if we don’t know context.

So few people know about these two nations and the current crisis they are both facing. They have real people living in them who have very important stories to tell. Over 300 million people around the world celebrate Nowruz—a huge spring holiday that’s also sometimes called Persian New Year—annually on March 20th or 21st (though this year it’s on March 19th). In this episode I explain Nowruz for folks who know little to nothing about it, and if you fit that description I can guarantee you’re going to enjoy learning about the unique and ancient traditions of Nowruz.
